CBS 8 is excited to announce "Desperation Reef" by T. Jefferson Parker as our latest book club selection. In this high-stakes thriller, a big-wave surfer and her sons compete in the same contest that killed her husband many years before. You can purchase a copy of the book at Warwick's or any local bookstore. You can also find it at the San Diego Public Library.

Here's a look at our past book club selections:

“Rouge” by Mona Awad

Our third book club selection for Book Date with 8 was "Rouge" by Mona Awad. Awad is a critically acclaimed author who has written many of her books in San Diego. “Rouge” is set in La Jolla and tells the story of a lonely young woman who’s drawn to a cult-like spa in the wake of her mother’s mysterious death. The book is a national bestseller, a NYT Editor’s Choice pick, and a Goodreads Choice Award Finalist.

“The Darkest White” by Eric Blehm

Our second book club selection for Book Date with 8 was "The Darkest White" by La Costa native, Eric Blehm! It’s the true story of legendary snowboarder Craig Kelly and his tragic death in 2003 following an avalanche in British Columbia. You can grab a copy from your local library or support a local bookstore, like our partners at Warwick's! Get your copy, get comfortable, and post any questions you have on our Facebook page for discussion.

“City on Fire” by Don Winslow

CBS 8 partnered with local bookstore, Warwick's, in selecting our first book as "City on Fire" by Don Winslow. Winslow is a local author, who lives near Julian. Don joined us in-studio in March, and you can watch our sit-down with him on CBS8+.

Here's a bit about the book:  Two criminal empires control all of New England. Until a beautiful woman comes between the Irish and the Italians, launching a war that will see them kill each other, destroy an alliance, and set a city on fire.

Danny Ryan yearns for a more “legit” life and a place in the sun. But as the bloody conflict stacks body on body and brother turns against brother, Danny has to rise above himself. To save the friends he loves like family and the family he has sworn to protect, he becomes a leader, a ruthless strategist, and a master of a treacherous game in which the winners live and the losers die.

From the gritty streets of Providence to the glittering screens of Hollywood to the golden casinos of Las Vegas, two rival crime families ignite a war that will leave only one standing. The winner will forge a dynasty.
