17,000 local kids expected to receive toys from the Salvation Army

The two-day annual giveaway of donated toys to parents of 1,400 San Diego children will continue Saturday at the Salvation Army Kroc Center's indoor skate park.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The two-day annual giveaway of donated toys to parents of 1,400 San Diego children will continue Saturday at the Salvation Army Kroc Center's indoor skate park.

Parents who signed up for the program last month will be escorted by volunteers through the Salvation Army Kroc Center's "Toy ‘n' Joy Gift Shop" to pick out a couple of gifts and food for a holiday meal.

Center officials said each of the families -- some 600 are expected -- can choose a large toy and a small toy for each child, along with a stocking stuffer and one family toy.

About 5,000 toys collected from local businesses in the organization's Angel Trees and toy drives will be distributed at the center Friday and Saturday, according to event organizers.

Each family who picks out toys at the Salvation Army Kroc Center will also get a donated food box prepared corresponding to family size. Some families also will receive gift cards that can be used to buy holiday meal ingredients.

About 44,000 toys will be distributed at the Salvation Army's seven locations throughout San Diego County. Event organizers estimated that more than 17,000 kids in San Diego County would receive toys distributed by the organization.
