Valley Center dog rescue asks for community's help to keep their doors open

The Coastal K-9 German Shepherd Rescue of San Diego could close down in a couple months if they don't get the money needed to continue running the center.

VALLEY CENTER, Calif. — Time is ticking for Coastal k9 German Shepherd Rescue of San Diego as they could only have a couple months left to stay open due to the center facing financial hardships.

"it would be devastating," Coastal k9 German Shepherd Rescue of San Diego Digital Admin Steve Remy said.

Since 2007, more than 5,000  dogs have been rescued and adopted thanks to the Coastal k9 German Shepherd Rescue of San Diego

“It's a place of refuge for many,” Remy said.

For years, it's become a safe haven for dogs without a home. But now, the rescue has hit a major financial hurdle. Annette Chang Good runs the orientation for the volunteers at the rescue, she tells CBS 8 that the center may only have a couple months until they have to close down.

“We have seven months until we have to fully close our doors,” Chang Good said.

About 35 dogs are under the rescue's care with a mix of German shepherds, husky's and other breeds. The closure of this center comes after costs keep going up which makes it difficult for the rescue to stay open.

“On a monthly basis, it's almost about 35,000 dollars to run this, so with the food up towards 100,000 a year. Medical expenses up 50...60,000 dollars a year you can see that it adds up really really quick,” Remy said.

Steve said sometimes when new dogs enter the rescue they are coming in with injuries or medical needs.

"We bring in the vet, the vet costs have tripled over the past two years,” Remy said.

The center needs the community's help to stay open and continue rescuing and rehoming dogs in need.

“We want to continue to do what we do to rescue these dogs and also the volunteers that come and the lives that it touches,” Chang Good said.
