City set to install more parking meters in East Village

Parking will cost $1.25 an hour with a two hour limit and run 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

SAN DIEGO — The City of San Diego is installing more parking meters in East Village. Parking will cost $1.25 an hour with a two-hour limit.

"I think about my friends that come to visit me and what they're having to go through and seeing how parking is kind of crazy now to add more meters. Kind of a hassle," said Jacob who lives in East Village.

The new meters are planned for Island Avenue, J and K Street between Park Boulevard and 17th street.

"My parking garage only allows one person to park so if your girlfriend, wife or spouse comes over then you're forced to park move it every two hours," Joshua said.

While other meters in town are in effect from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., these new meters will run 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

"At least after 6 p.m. we were cool and done with it but going till 8 p.m. oh come on," Jacob said.

Some people we talked to worry about the businesses in East Village and how customers might be impacted.

"There's not a lot of parking that's right near the restaurants. It could be difficult for the people to find places to park," said Patrick who lives in East Village.

While in an online post the city says the meters will help manage parking and increase turnover that will be a benefit to businesses and residents.

"Who wants to pay an extra ticket with inflation already high," Jacob said. "You know we really have to be considerate with what we're doing."

The city says revenues will be used on mobility-related projects in the area such as neighborhood lighting or crosswalk improvements.
