How money raised by Salvation Army, CBS 8 is helping flood victims

So far, the Salvation Army says more than 1,400 flood victims have received more than $37,000 in financial assistance.

SAN DIEGO — Last week, CBS 8 partnered with the Salvation Army to help flood victims, and viewers came through. We raised nearly $160,000 to help people impacted by the devastating storm that swept through San Diego County Jan. 22.

"Well, the money has been a game changer," said Major Amy Reardon with the Salvation Army.

Major Reardon said they’ve already put $40,000 to good use.

"I mean, we needed that to be able to provide the things that we're providing, like I said, to have underwear and socks, right on hand. We're giving to parents and each person who comes in, and that's not cheap, when you really start to look at it," said Major Reardon.

So far, the Salvation Army says more than 1,400 flood victims have received more than $37,000 in financial assistance. More than 300 households received clothing assistance with a total of 4,505 clothing items. And they’ve given out nearly 300 hygiene kits and almost 500 snack items for those in need at local assistance centers.

Now, they are also providing vouchers to flood victims.

"We're using the money to give out vouchers for thrift stores $25 per person, which goes a long way. It's about three times as much as a normal discount store," said Major Reardon.

She said as long as people can prove they live in a flood prone area, they can have access to these vouchers.

The Salvation Army is still asking for items including toiletries and clothing. They're planning to provide more direct relief following the next round of storms coming this week. If you would like make a monetary donation to the Salvation Army, visit the organization's donation page here.

"I just want to thank this amazing community for caring about each other. It is a really remarkable place to be. Thank you, San Diego," said Major Reardon.
