Trial date to be set for former star athlete involved in fatal car crash

EL CAJON (CNS) - A trial date was expected to be set Thursday for a former star pitcher at Steele Canyon High School, accused of causing a head-on crash that killed a 50-year-old Spring Valley man.

Andrew Bellatti is charged with vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and two counts of reckless driving causing serious injuries - all felonies - in the Jan. 22 collision that killed David Norman Reid.

Authorities said Bellatti was driving up to 80 mph when his Ford Mustang veered onto the wrong side of Campo Road about 4:20 p.m., striking Reid's Dodge Caravan.

Reid's 17-year-old son, a passenger in the minivan and a student at Steele Canyon High, suffered major injuries, according to the CHP.

Rescuers tried to revive the elder Reid at the scene, but were unable to save him, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

CHP Officer Brian Pennings said there was no indication that drugs or alcohol played a part in the crash.

Bellatti, 18 at the time of the crash, was taken in the 12th round of last year's Minor League Baseball Draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. He was seriously injured in the crash.

His passenger, a 16-year-old female student at Steele Canyon, also was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
