YMCA of San Diego County confirms more than 2,000 employees were laid off

The layoffs amount to nearly half of their total staff.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. — The YMCA of San Diego County confirmed to News 8 Wednesday the reduction of nearly half of their staff, totaling 2,047 employees.

In a statement to News 8, the YMCA said it was a result of COVID-19 restrictions.

“With a heavy heart, the YMCA of San Diego County can confirm the layoff of nearly half our total staff due to Covid-19 regulations and our inability to operate a majority of our programs. These layoffs were effective Jan. 12, 2021. Our staff is the heartbeat of our organization and we made multiple efforts to maintain all staff. We’re hopeful that as we move into less-restrictive tiers, we’ll be able to recover and reassemble our team."

The state's Employment Development Department received a WARN notice for the layoffs March 4.

Employees were notified in November before the layoffs took effect Jan. 12.

Prior to COVID-19, the YMCA of San Diego County had about 5,500 employees.
