Multi-car crash shuts down freeway lanes in Carlsbad

California Highway Patrol shut down all northbound lanes of traffic while crews worked to clear a multi-vehicle crash.

CARLSBAD, Calif. — California Highway Patrol shut down all northbound lanes of traffic Friday afternoon while crews worked to clear a multi-car crash.

9-1-1 dispatchers received reports around 1:36 p.m. that a car was on fire on northbound Interstate 5 near the Palomar Airport Road exit after a crash involving three sedans, two vans, and a semi-truck, according to CHP logs.

Another person who called 9-1-1 said a truck was on top of another vehicle.

At least one person was transported to an area hospital for medical evaluation, but the extent of their injuries or if more people were injured is unknown.

"The van is ripped in half from the side - one vehicle still smoking," a log from California Highway Patrol stated.

Live traffic maps showed that the northbound direction of Interstate 5 surrounding the crash had stopped.

By 2:05 p.m., California Highway Patrol requested officials issue a Sigalert for the area.

Authorities reported a sweeper was needed to remove debris from the roadway.

Officials opened just one northbound traffic lane while crews worked to clear debris from the roadway.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

This is a developing story. Check back here for updates.
