Freeway shut down in Carlsbad as police negotiate with pursuit suspect

Northbound Interstate 5 in Carlsbad was shut down while police negotiated a suspect who led authorities on a chase into custody.

CARLSBAD, Calif. — Northbound lanes of Interstate 5 in Carlsbad were shut down Thursday afternoon while police worked to bring a pursuit suspect into custody.

Carlsbad Police Department told CBS 8 that a pursuit that ended around 12:35 p.m. near Poinsettia Lane left all northbound lanes closed due to "ongoing police activity."

California Highway Patrol issued a Sigalert around 1:45 p.m. as traffic was backed up to about Birmingham Avenue in Encinitas.

Carlsbad Police said a woman who stole a rideshare vehicle evaded officers after "committing felony vandalism against a vehicle at the 6000 block of Paseo Del Norte."

The suspect reportedly brandished a large knife and made life-threatening statements, according to Carlsbad police.

The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Darneisha Hill of San Diego, eventually peacefully surrendered to officers and was taken into custody.

"The female was taken into custody and booked into Vista Detention Facility for an outstanding felony warrant from a prior incident, felony vandalism, brandishing a knife, assault with a deadly weapon, carjacking, resisting arrest, and felony evading," according to Carlsbad police.

Video shared on Twitter by News Flash Media, a service that provides breaking news video to several local media outlets, showed an armored SWAT truck and dozens of officers stopped in northbound lanes of traffic in Carlsbad.

Lanes were reportedly reopened around 2:30 p.m., but traffic in the area was severely impacted as Interstate 5 through Carlsbad resumed normal flow.
